What is Search Engine Optimization?

Before we are able to understand the impact of search engine optimization in the modern architecture of the Internet, we must first be able to identify why it is needed and how users search the net. When one needs information off the Internet, one does not prefer to a proverbial yellow pages of websites and a list of their specific URL addresses.  Instead, the user would go to a search engine.  Popular search engines today are Google, Yahoo, ask.com, MSN.com, and so forth.

These search engines provide a search box where in users may be able to input searching keywords in order to retrieve the websites with relevant data.  For example, typing in Microsoft to the search box that Google would yield the results of the main website of Microsoft Corporation, the Microsoft download Center, an article in Wikipedia concerning what Microsoft is, the Microsoft help and support Center, the Windows update Center, and so forth.

The job of search engine optimization is the method of finding what specific keywords and combination of these keywords may be able to push up a certain website to the top of the list.  If you are a company that sells digital cameras, and the consumer would like to purchase a digital camera from the Internet by typing in digital camera in the search box of Google.com, search engine optimization is the process of making sure that your company appears that a top of the list, or relatively high year than all the other companies that sell digital cameras online.  Defined, search engine optimization is a process of editing and organizing data found within a website or a webpage in order to increase the relevance of specific keyword topic searches on such search engines.

In the past, search engine optimization was not so much a science but a heap in this method because the basic use of past search engine algorithm technology was finding the most number of words appearing on a certain website and returning them as a top result on the keyword search.  However, this results in certain problems because if one wants to be on the top of the list when searching for Chinese Barbie dolls, for example, one just needs to copy and paste about a hundred or more Chinese Barbie dolls phrases on the website.

Recently, however, search engines have varied their methods in order to return the website with the highest relevance concerning a complicated algorithm of keyword or key phrase relevance, occurrence, importance, and back links.  Therefore, the job of the search engine optimizers finds the best use and design, as well as content modification, of a website in order to make sure that they appear in the top of the list when making a keyword search from one of the many popular search engines around today taking into consideration their algorithms for search and retrieval of data of website address.

The primary use of this is through search engine optimization indexing and understanding of such a concept.
