There are probably millions of websites in the internet. So to find a website you like could become quite a task. This is where search engines like Google or Yahoo comes in. Using this search engines you could type a certain keyword and it will come up with a search page result. These results are presented according to the relevance of the keywords you inputted. Usually the search engine has an algorithm to determine the most relevant website that is appropriate to the keyword you chose. If you have a website you probably want your webpage to appear on top of the search page results. This is what SEO (search engine optimization) does, it helps your webpage to appear on the top of the search page results.
SEO techniques usually depend on how a search engines behave. There are some legitimate methods that make search engine know that your site exists. Some bad techniques might involve exploiting search engines so that your site comes up on top of the search. Most of the time, it’s difficult to tell if an approach is legitimate but if it’s questionable it may be bad all along.
White Hat SEO techniques are usually a good way to push your website ranking up. Search engines categorize you websites through keywords. Most search engines have programs called “spiders” or “crawlers” that analyze individual website. These web crawlers will categorize and rank your website according to the keywords it will see in the site. So it’s important to place keywords in the title page or headers. But don’t overuse it because your website could be flagged for keyword stuffing. Keywords are not the only factor in determining your page rank. Most search engines utilize link analysis to see how many sites are linking on your page. It means that more web page linking in your site the more people are using it as reference. If the search engine sees this your page could be ranked higher.
There is also a bad side for this; it is called the Black Hat techniques. Usually these are techniques that cheat search engine to push a sites rank up. A popular method is called keyword stuffing wherein the keywords are repeatedly overused throughout the site. Usually they are placed on the bottom where it is not obvious to most visitors. Webmasters might also put in irrelevant words to the site. They usually put popular keywords into their website, even though it is irrelevant, so that its ranking will be higher. Farming links are also a popular black hat technique. As search engines also look at the links to and from the website, webmasters use link farms to increase the linkage of their websites. Small link farms are okay but some of them contain hundreds of website, each with a web page just dedicated to listing of links of every other website in the farm. Cheating the system might drive up your website ranking. But people are not fools, and in the long run you might lose more visitors than you could gain them. Also search engines have utilized ways to detect these techniques.
I ve always used white hat SEO techniques, operationally it maybe time consuming but it will pay in the long run. No point working on black hat techniques Google’s alogo are powerful to track it down and devalue your page rank and ranking
So true. Best to stick with white hat because like you say its good in the long run.

Somehow, I don’t know why, keyword stuffing sometimes still work and stand on top page for long time. I see many pages repeat their keyword target on the page over and over again.
Great stuff, Bruno. But I’m all for the “grey-hat” techniques which I could use the best of both “white and black” techniques and please don’t ask me what they are….;)
