Internet marketing is a relatively a new way of doing business online and is growing to an unprecedented and incredible rate, no thanks to geeks pounding on the computers day in and day out in active website and product promotion. As it is, the industry is constantly changing and every day brings about new business models and novel ways in beating the competition. But some of the rules remain the same and for dummies, it is good to take a dip on how successful websites did efficient and effective marketing online.

Pay per click advertising is sometimes called website traffic buying. Rightly so, pay per click advertising is like running a full page ad on a popular magazine in real life, except that the magazine is a more popular website (Yahoo, Google, YouTube – just to mention a few) and the ad is a hyperlink or a banner of the website-advertiser. The name implies that the traffic – the volume of users – of the “popular website” is directed to the homepage of the advertiser. It is also called piggybacking, which is that an unknown website is riding on the popularity of another website.

Classified advertising webpages are websites that basically are running a database of advertisements categorized to specific fields. Some classified advertising webpages come free, others are not. Websites put an advertisement to be included in the database. When users are searching for a particular field (like online writing jobs or used school buses for sale), they can retrieve advertisements from the database. An example of these webpages is Craiglist.

Search engine optimization is a website promotion scheme that makes it a point to bring an unknown website to the first few ranks of a search engine query result. For an example, if a user inputs the word “journalist”, the search engine would return a list of websites that mention the word. The list is ranked according to the most relevant (judged by how many users click on site’s link) to the least known. Search engine optimization works by making the website’s content more relevant and regularly updated and embedding articles in forums and blogs containing a website’s hyperlink.

Keyword analysis is used for search engine optimization. A keyword is a word or a phrase that majority of users would think of entering in a search engine. As an example, if a user is into health supplements he or she might use the keywords “herbal supplement/s”. Mentioning the keyword somewhere in a website will be indexed by search engine, which then retrieves the website’s link when the user enters the keyword.

Forum marketing or forum submission is generating a talk about a website or a product sold online in a forum of a social networking website or any website that has a forum feature.. Internet marketing is done by placing a question and people would answer, or when there is a debatable issue (like the use of steroids) that people would like to discuss about. By initiating the talk, the website can place a hyperlink somewhere in the messages that participants of the forum can check.
