Who’s Stealing my Bandwidth?

By Bruno Auger On December 2, 2008 21 Comments

There are several ways that you can stop the bandwidth thieves from stealing your bandwidth. If they have an email, I would contact them personally or go through Domaintools.com and do an IP lookup which will give you information on the person and who the site is registered to. You can always get in touch with the hosting company that hosts their site too. Bandwidth can be expensive and the last thing that you want is someone stealing it.

You Internet Service Provider (ISP for short) can limit how much  bandwidth you can use at certain times during peak periods or charge you a flat fee every month for usage. If you go over your usage limit regularly, then they will suggest you upgrade to a bigger bandwith package.

Files that are uploaded or downloaded from servers uses bandwidth to push files along the network at various speeds. Every time you upload a file to your hosting server, surf the web or watching streaming video, you are using bandwidth.

Bandwidth is a group of fibers or wires connecting servers to a network. Depending on the quality of the wire it determines how much data can flow across the network where your website is hosted. When someone attempts to use more bandwidth than can be handled by the system, the traffic slows down.

You can upload almost any file (webpages, sound files, images, videos and other programs) to your website. This excludes, of course, pop ups, banners , pdf files, scripts and images which are supposed to be loaded from your hosting server.

Bandwidth thieves link to audio, images and other files directly to your server instead of putting them on their own server. There are many reasons as to why people do this but, the main reason is to maximize the bandwidth they steal as much as possible to show their links and images.

Bandwidth is something you should monitor careful because you never know when someome will borrow and image or link from you for their personal gain.

Free and Cheap Web Hosting Options for Conscious Consumer

By Bruno Auger On November 30, 2008 23 Comments

Consumers are always looking for good deals on the internet concerning web hosting and space. You should also consider how long the hosting company has been in business.

A free service provides benefits to all people and may sound like a good idea but the goal is to do your research to see if the deals are viable or not. Free services can also bring other unwanted things that you have to deal with when you sign up for the service. Usually, you have to submit to advertising and surveys by filling out a form before you can get your free service. Be sure that you read the user agreements that come with the free services.

Free sites also come with some cool stuff, such as counters, guestbooks, virtual domain names, tracking logs, blogs, copy and past scripts that are usually Java code scripts and more. These additions are good for people that have little or no knowledge into building a web site.

Social Networking and Social Network Sites

By Bruno Auger On September 17, 2008 2 Comments

Social networking is defined as getting involved with people, can be making friends or establishing relationships with strangers, through the web.

The popularity of online social networks through social network websites started in the middle to late 1990s when features of profiles of users, message inboxes, list of friends, and groups of friends who have the same passion for something were put together in one website which was SixDegrees.com.  However, SixDegrees was not very successful and in time had shut down in the year 2000.

While other business speak proud of being the first, being the first for SixDegrees was not an advantage at all.  Though they gave the idea of coming up with different useful communication features which were separately available from one website to another for internet users, the site’s market was not yet ready for the new technology of making friends online.  And because it was the first, technical difficulties were not avoided and that did not please many users.

Customer Support: Knowing, Educating and Selling

By Bruno Auger On September 1, 2008 1 Comment

There are so many ways that you can become the best sales representative around. It all starts and ends with you and how you handle things. It is what you know and how you show others. It is in how you handle products, people and business in general.

First of all you must know what you are selling. Most telemarketers have to do weeks of training because they are all about customer support. Not only do they have to learn how to talk to people, they must learn the products and/or services that they are selling. For instance, say you are working for a cell phone company. Most of the customer support representatives need to know about the phone, about billing and how to fix the phone as well.

Knowledge is power and this is definitely one quality that you must possess to be the best of customer service representatives. The reason is because you have to be able to fervently and effectively explain to the customer without hesitation. Would you want an explanation of something that made absolutely no sense because the person explaining it didn’t make sense? Ah, thought so.

How to Choose a Web Host Part 2

By Bruno Auger On August 3, 2008 No Comments

Okay so after reading part 1, you should have more or less a good idea of what to look for when choosing a web host. Again, web hosting is a cut throat industry and the barriers to entry are very low. All you really need is to plunk a chunk of money for web servers and hire good server administrators and programmers. Sometimes you don’t even need to do that. You can just purchase a reseller account and pretend that you’re actually a hosting company.

Traffic/Bandwidth

Data transfer to web site visitors or bandwidth is the amount of data (in bytes) transferred from your website to the visitors upon browsing. Some web hosts offer unlimited bandwidth but again please be wary of this unless your site is expected to generate huge amounts of traffic constantly. Check the fine print because usually, “unlimited” means a certain number; beyond that you might have to pay a little extra if the web host is not willing to shoulder the cost.

Tech Support

This is actually the most important part of any web host service. The support function should ideally have a 24 hour 7 days work week. When starting a new website you will be surprised at how things go wrong at the most inconvenient time. Sometimes a flood of new traffic will send your server crashing down thereby decreasing your chances to get a sale. On your free time, you might want to give them a call even on Saturdays and Sundays just to check if they will respond immediately. One thing to take note of is to make sure that they are actually competent. Some will read off of a manual like a robot. Ask intelligent questions to test them.

Email Address

If you have your own website with your own dot com address then you would probably want to have your own email like yourname@yoursite.com. A lot of web hosts offer this service for free so make sure you set up your own email with your own dotcom address. You usually can have it work with your existing mail client such as Outlook or Eudora.

Choosing a Web Host that’s Right For You

By Bruno Auger On August 1, 2008 No Comments

So you’ve decided to finally shell out some money to get a web host for yourself. Good for you! While free web-hosting might work for some people, it really is an advantage to have total control over your web site minus the annoying ads which you have no control over (they mess up your layout badly). Before choosing a web host, makes sure to consider the following:

Reliability and Speed – A web host ideally should not have any down time. Remember that the internet is operating 24 hours 7 days a week that’s because the web doesn’t shut down when one part of the world is dark. You should look for a MINIMUM uptime of 99%. It would be better if you could get 99.5% or higher based on REAL statistics. The host should provide some form of reimbursement or refund to be credited to your next billing should the uptime fall below the states figure. After all, you could be losing potential sales during that down time period.

Disk Space

One thing to note is that you should have pretty much a good idea of how much space you’re going to need. Most websites would probably take up from 10 megabytes to 50 megabytes of server space. Be wary of web hosts which offer unlimited disk space for a “small” fee. Although it’s nice to have unlimited space if you’re hosting a lot of sites (so you won’t have to worry about space), you rarely would fill it up. Just purchase what you really need and don’t be tempted to upsize your disk space.

Price

Last of course is price. Almost everyone would probably offer you the same price. Web hosting is a cut throat industry and most of them compete on price, not on service. Remember, just because one host is cheaper than the other doesn’t mean that it’s better.

More advanced types of Web Hosting Services

By Bruno Auger On July 30, 2008 No Comments

Managed Hosting Service – the client usually gets his her own web server but usually does not have total control over it (no root access for Linux based servers and administrator access for windows based servers). Clients are however allowed to manage their files and other data via FTP and some form of remote tool that allows for sever management. The web hosts typically do not allow total control under this service to guarantee utmost quality of service and prevent configuration problems for the client. The server in this case is leased to the client.

Collocated Web hosting Service – Under this set up the user actually owns the collocated server. The hosting company usually a lots a physical space in their office/headquarters for the server to take up and takes care of the server. For most people this web hosting service would cost a lot of money but is ideal for most businesses or high-traffic web sites. The web hosting company under this set up will provide little support for the client’s machine but will provide electricity, internet access (bandwidth), and storage facilities (and coolants) for the server. The client will typically have his own web administrator visit the web hosting company’s data center to make any upgrades or software changes.

Cluster Hosting – In this set up multiple servers are hosting the same content. This is particularly helpful if you have a lot of people downloading stuff from your web site. This set up allows you to create a scalable version of your web site to allow more and more people to visit your web site without a hitch.

Home Server – If you’re the do it yourself type of guy then this one may be for you. This is usually hosted on a single machine in a private residence with a broadband connection using a Windows-based or Linux-based server.

Types of Web Hosting Services

By Bruno Auger On July 28, 2008 No Comments

Free Web hosting service – typically this one is as the name implies, FREE, but is often advertisement-supported. There’s not much features to expect from this type of service when compared to paid web hosting.

Shared web hosting – typically your web site is placed on the same server/space with several other sites ranging from low 50s to the thousands. These other web sites share the same server resources such as memory and CPU. If your site has a lot of traffic, putting it in a shared space may not be a good idea.

Reseller web hosting – reseller web hosting allows clients of web hosting services to become web hosts themselves. This is ideal for aspiring web hosting entrepreneurs who want to take advantage of existing technology to host their web host. All they have to do is to market their web hosting service to prospective customers. They do not need a physical server as it is collocated with another host.

Virtual Dedicated Server – This is just one server divided into several virtual servers. Each user’s experience will be as if they own their own dedicated server when in fact they’re sharing it with other users.

Dedicated hosting service – the user will get his own web server and has full control over it (root access for Linux-based servers and administrator access for windows based servers). The user typically does not own the server; he/she rather rents it. Some dedicated hosting plans give the responsibility of securing and maintaining the server to the user itself. This gives the customer total control over the security features of the web hosting box.
