Suspended by Twitter

By Bruno Auger On October 24, 2008 Posted under Bruno Auger

The last couple of weeks I haven’t been able to use twitter because of being reported for spam violations. I find this highly amusing since all I was using twitter for was to post updates on my blog and communicating with other users.

I got the usual auotmated response from Twitter:

Hello ,

Thanks for your email. One or more of these things may cause your account to be flagged for review:

1. You’ve followed a large number of people in a short amount of time

2. there is a small number of followers compared to number of people you’re following

3. The updates consist mainly of links and not personal updates

4. 15 people blocking the profile and writing in with spam complaints

5. Creating serial accounts and re-tweeting updates

When this happens, we suspend the account temporarily and hide the contents from the public timeline in order to remove the cause of user complaint. We like to keep the Twitter community more based on personal updates rather than links, and ask that you manage your content according to this. I can turn your profile on for your current followers, but we’ll monitor the profile and if complaints continue we’ll have to turn it off again. Thanks for your understanding in this matter,

Cheers,

Twitter Support

I also got flagged for being antisocial whatever the hell that is and never really got and explaination on that term either.

As you can see there are just automated response to any question that you ask them. I know they may have to deal with many complaints and stuff but at least tell me what exactly I am suspended for. So I write back and ask this.

You know these automated responses are really dumb. Just tell me exactly what I need to do to get my account active again?

and their response

Hi,

We’ve reviewed your account and the reason why it was suspended is because the majority of your updates contained spam like links to websites such as this: http://ping.fm/dXxdH

We prefer that the updates be more personal. Good examples of this would be users such as @zappos, @jetblue, @wholefoods. You may create a new account but if we receive complaints from the Twitter community, your account may be suspended again.

We appreciate your understanding in this matter.

Cheers,

So I guess they don’t like updates from ping.fm unless you break them up with other postings too twitter. I know I have did a few posting but damm I didn’t think this would make a difference.I watch people that I had on my old account that posts like every few mins every hour. Wouldn’t this considered being spam or not?  I see others using ping.fm on twitter too but do they get banned? Who knows

So,which service is right to use? I know they use tiny url but is that any different that using ping.fm, budurl, shorturl or whatever url redirect service there is out there to use. Do I use a service like twhirl like I was before or another twiter service? Maybe, i’ll jusat use several different ones and go from there

Just remember if you account get suspended no use trying to get it unsuspended because they wont. They wil just tell you to make a new one. So add me to your twitter today http://twitter.com/BrAuger

You know I never understoof how they call anything spam, as the only people who see your posts are the people who CHOOSE to see them.

I always post myself with updates as I have been worried about using any software for posting links.

Tara
I don’t know either. Lots of people post from all over using other applications to twitter.

I see lots of people I was following that would post lots everyday. Sure mind you I never interacted much but I still did and posted only about my blog like most others.

I hardly ever use Twitter, so I have never been suspended or anything, but I do think I use some apps on my account that I set and forgot

Sorry to hear about it. I notice that you have created a new account, haven’t you? Anyway I heard similar story on the use of ping.fm, probably the two don’t go along very well. I can’t remember what I use to twit my latest post but it’s definitely not ping.fm.

By the way, I’ve just followed you and hope you’ll keep the account this time…;)

I never done anything bad. I use twitter like anyone else does, but I guess to them I was spamming. Ping.fm you need to get invited to use their service.

Tara has a point… how is a spam when you update with links and stuff? It’s not like you were going around just adding adding adding… if they choose to follow you then they choose to get your updates.

If not, then just don’t follow them anymore instead of reporting…

Who knows what Twitter think is spam. I know people choose to follow you and you updates but like you say if you don’t like it don’t follow.

I registered a while ago and it says in their guidelines, that spam is taken seriously but not sure if I will call shorten URL spammy. Hope you get it rectified.

I haven’t done anything that anyone else is doing. Twitter has no intention on removing the suspension from my old account so I made a new one.

That sucks. It’s not like you are getting back-links from the updates anyway. Why should you be forced to make updates about what you had for lunch just to stay within the Twitter rules? That’s not why you joined and it’s not why you followers decided to follow you.

Ya
Oh well no biggie Twitter will dictate the way they want to run their prpgram so what can you do and to try and abide by their guidelines even made up ones.
